Island Brač - Supetar

Supetar is Brač´s center. All the ways lead there and start off from
there. Supetar is a bridge to Split.
One should speak about two Supetars. About the one that was set in the
pituresque peninsula of the present cemetery in the times of the Romans
untill Early Christian times.
Than it died out, slept through some centuries, the whole of the later
Middle Ages, and than started Modern Times in Glavica, Vrdolac, Varoš.
From these points it descented in circles towards the sea, to set around
the ancient chapel of St.Peter (in portu sancti Petri), and the little
bay which was, in these times of transitions, the port of Nerežišća
(q.v.), the Brač capital for eight centuries.
Supetar became its capital at the begining of the 19th century thanks to
its rapid development and to the best possible site it had chosen.
Name Supetar - where did it come from...
The basilica in Supetar with its patron St.Peter gave its name to the
settlement (sanctu Petru - Supetar).
The phonetic changes are evidence that the Croats adopted this name
before the end of the 10th century altough the name was mentioned for
the first time only in the 1423.
